I’m Sarah Beaton, a gluten-free/grain-free food blogger and recipe developer living in Michigan. My path to the grain-free diet began in 2003. Out of necessity due to various food allergies and intolerances, I decided to put my family on a gluten-free and casein-free diet (GFCF). Also during that time, we had to face diagnoses of egg, soy and tree nut/peanut allergies. Later on, a family member was diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease and gastritis. After many years of eating GFCF, I came to the conclusion I needed to do more. After much research, I discovered the grain-free/Paleo communities and set out to learn everything I could about that way of eating. We began a grain-free diet in January 2012 and have noticed many more improvements in how we feel.
I can understand and appreciate those of you who have multiple food allergies and the stress it places on a family. Going to restaurants, sending your children to birthday parties or attending family gatherings can be very trying, especially when others do not understand the seriousness of the situation. Planning ahead to make sure there will be something for your family to eat is essential. When my children were younger, I was the mom baking special allergen-free cupcakes to send with them to school functions and birthday parties. Now that my children are teenagers, I am faced with teaching them to manage their food allergies on their own. In some ways, this has been more challenging.
Currently, we follow an organic Paleo diet and are still living with an allergy to tree nuts/peanuts. I’m filled with hope and am constantly on the lookout for new treatments in the field of anaphylactic allergies.
One of my favorite places to be is in the kitchen; cooking and baking for others brings me happiness! I’m passionate about helping others improve their health through better food choices and that desire is what inspired me to launch Crave & Savor. Food is meant to nourish the body and make one feel good. I believe good health is the basis for living a full and vibrant life. Years ago, I made the decision I would always put living healthy at the top of my list. Whole, nutritious foods are healing and I encourage others to seek them out and avoid processed foods whenever possible. When you crave an occasional treat, make sure you savor it by using healthier ingredients such as unrefined sweeteners and healthy fats. Your body will thank you!
Another passion that has always been very important to me is removing as many chemicals from my life as possible. Aside from food, this includes personal care products, cleaning products and anything else you regularly put on your body or breathe in. I enjoy helping others ditch their toxic products for organic alternatives. Often they will notice a difference once their toxic load is reduced. I know I have!
At this point, I plan to focus my blog on grain-free recipes most of the time. Occasionally I will post a recipe that I love that includes flours that are gluten-free, but not grain-free. I invite you to email me your suggestions and feedback. Thanks for stopping by; I wish you many happy moments in the kitchen with those you hold close to your heart!
